Should a religious teenager be on Facebook?

Can Facebook also be used for positive things and should it be banned in schools?
Dovid Teitelbaum vs Beis Rivka
Talkline with Zev Brenner

Exclusive First Interview with Mrs. Shana Teichtel Principal of Beis Rivka School who has banned Facebook appeared on Talkline with Zev Brenner . Also students from the Beis rivkah school Chana Mushka Alevsky, Mushka Bogomilsky, and Chaya Mushka Bar Chaim appeared on the program who agreed with the the Facebook ban. Dovid Teitelbaum took an apposing view and thinks Facebook can be used positively if used with privacy controls and moderation.

Also discused was Dovid Teitelbaum's editorial published earlier this week. All apeared on Talkline with Zev brenner on WMCA 570am and worldwide on the internet at talklinecommunications.com from 12am

and then come back to this page and discuss the issue

Please note: The discussion with the girls starts at about 01:07. In my opinion these girls did their best trying to uphold the policy of the schools. While I took a different view I thought they did very well under the given conditions. I respect them for obeying rules of the school.

Here are some articles to support my view. I hope to publish a paper on this soon.

  1. Interesting talk. The most amusing part was that all those 3 girls were named Mushka or Chaya Mushka. Then they got a call from Mushka in crown Heights!

  3. I listened to all your points about settings that could be used on Facebook to set up a closed group.

And your idea having google chrome set up to limit how many minutes, and when, you're on FB so it doesn't take over your life.

And the idea of having parents be their kid's FB friends.

At some point, those ideas may not work. Most teenagers won't allow their parents to be their FB friends. Older children don't have an issue but not teenagers. They want their space.

I'm guessing they can figure out how to change the google chrome settings too.

I wonder if klal yisroel would be ready to set up FB mentors to be involved in our teenagers' FB lives. I know NCSY does exactly that, and I see you and your wife do that. But is the yeshiva olam open to that idea? The way it stands now, absolutely not.

    1. You made some great points, that someone who doesnt use facebook will not get. A friend on facebook deosnt mean that you are teen-friends. Just like real life, parents shouldnt be thier kids friends. Most teens on facebook have all their relatives and neighbors as friends too. Most kids know that what they post will be seen by many others besides their buddies(the fact that they dont care is because teens dont think through everything) If a parent comments on a post or photo of a child, it would seem weird just like if she but in to a convo teens were having among themselves, unless its a cool parent that the kids really like. Again, this will only work with a parent or rebbi that is open minded and will use the information that he picks up wisely.
about the facebook group, I did start one and its on the side of the blog, called "A teens view on Jewish Education". I havent worked it through yet. I still have one problem. What do I do if a teacher or principle uses it to get their students in trouble for having facebook?

    2. If the teacher wants to get their student in trouble via FB, your group won't affect that. Additionally, it is up to the teens to decide whether to join or not if they're worried about getting busted for whatever reason. -yoni

  4. it was a pretty cool interview. just saying, stupid and immature people will be stuppid and immature wtvr they do! weather its a status they make on facebook or just when they are walking down the block. from what i c the worst fb addictions wont last past shana reshona. so if your worried about your childrens addictions, there are lots of worse addictions to worry about first! (and just on a personal note i would not be able to manage in isreal so long without fb, i have no erge to come bak to america cuz i feel like im there). thats just something positive.

  7. Regarding yeahbaby---Some people may think learning to write clearly in English is destructive.

Nevertheless, there is a real problem in using social media. When we do real teshuvah, our sin is wiped away, but when we put some indiscretion on the Web, including through Facebook, it spreads and is pretty permanent!
